Mentor Coaching

Overview

Mentor Coaching is a developmental process that unfolds through a continuous cycle of coaching with feedback, with opportunities to reflect on your coaching and apply newly developed skills and insights into your future sessions. These labs are about developing a growth mindset, not about making sure you have ticked every competency off or showcasing a ‘perfect’ session. It is a place to learn, amongst your supportive peers, so settle in and feel comfortable to make mistakes!

Planning & Participation

Mentor Coaching has specific requirements which require planning and consideration.

There must be at least 3 months between your first session (as coach or participant) and your last session (as coach or participant). You must also register for the role of coach and we advise that you plan ahead.

What is Mentor Coaching?

Mentor Coaching is the process of receiving feedback from an experienced PCC or MCC coach. The feedback is given for session recordings and mapped against the ICF competencies.

Mentor Coaching Journal

The Mentor Coaching Journal will prepare you for attending the sessions, with prompts that will deepen your learning and reflection.

The beginning
The very first session (as either coach or group participant) is the first session.
 
The end
The very last session (as either coach or group participant) is the last session.

Your client can be an ICA peer or someone from outside ICA.  The main thing when selecting your client is to choose someone who is coachable and who understands the purpose of the session.

If you choose a peer, be mindful that they remain in the role of client and resist self coaching during the session (eg. asking themselves powerful questions or generating awareness without your intervention).

No. You can only attend the number of sessions required (as per your graduation checklist)

However, Coach Development labs and Coaching Competency labs have a very similar format and can be attended more times than your program allocation (if needed).

Well, yes and no.

The intent for Mentor Coaching is that the learning is progressive so ideally you would record a new sample each session.  However, if you find that a session you record has more than a 1 x 10 minute sample you would like feedback on then yes, you can use multiple samples from the one recording.

The last thing we want to do is ‘police’ mentor coaching registrations or charge fees for cancellations and no shows. It’s time consuming for our support team, and it doesn’t feel good for anyone.

But, at the same time, for the registration system to be fair and accessible, sessions need to be attended as booked. To not attend a scheduled session, regardless of the reason, is at the potential cost of another student having been able to book and attend. There is also administrative time and support required.

However, we do appreciate that sometimes the need to cancel is simply unavoidable. If this happens, let us know as soon as possible and we will try and fill the session. If the session can not be filled, a $50 will apply.    Read more

Zoom Sessions

Mentor Labs are delivered through Zoom and you will attend as both participant and coach. Your graduation checklist specifies the required number of sessions, along with space to record the date and trainer for each session attended.

In the Role of Participant

As a participant, you will observe the sessions presented by your peers and learn from the faculty feedback. You must only attend your allocated number of sessions (not more) but can attend any session shown on the schedule.

In the Role of Coach

You will attend a mentoring session during which 40 mins will be allocated for your mentoring and feedback. This includes you playing a 10 minute pre recorded coaching conversation and the faculty providing 30 minutes of feedback and recommendations. For the remainder of the session you will take on the role of participant, observing the coaching and feedback of others. Please refer to the pre-learning course guide for more information.
